CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team dropped a pair of games to wrap up the Chanticleer Showdown on Sunday, suffering a 1-0 setback to Boston College before a late rally fell short in a 7-4 decision to Murray State.
The Chants are now 7-6 on the season, with four of the defeats coming by two or fewer runs.
In the day's opener against Boston College, Kiana Quolas pitched around a one-out double in the first inning, getting a strikeout to end the frame. However, the Eagles used a pair of hits in the second to tally the game's only run. A seeing-eye single up the middle led off the inning and an RBI double by Jordan Chimento gave the Eagles the lead.
Coastal had a chance its first good chance to pull even in the fourth. Quolas hit hard infield single to lead off and, after a fielder's choice off the bat of Morgan Noad, Kory Hayden was hit by a pitch. Noad then moved up on a wild pitch, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Boston College starter Allyson Frei got a flyout to shallow center and a strikeout to keep the lead.
Frei pitched out of trouble again in the fifth. After loading the bases with one out on three walks, she induced a foulout and flyout to end that threat.
Amanda Daneker had a solid single up the middle with one out in the sixth and Bri Chiusano beat out a grounder to third for an infield hit with one out in the seventh before stealing second to get into scoring position. However, Coastal was unable to take advantage in either case, finishing with 10 runners left on base in the game.
Frei (9-2) limited the Chants to three hits and had 10 strikeouts to go along with five walks. Quolas (3-4) scattered six hits and got solid defense behind her to help the Chants keep the deficit to just one throughout. She struck out two and walked none.
Coastal broke through for its first run of the day quickly against Murray State. Chiusano drew a leadoff walk and stole her 10th base of the season before scoring on Quolas' RBI double to the right-field corner.
Murray State answered in the top of the second with a three-run home run that followed a double and a walk. The Chanticleers had a chance in the bottom of the fourth as a Murray State error and two walks loaded the bases with two outs, but Racers pitcher Mason Robinson escaped with a strikeout.
Murray State then made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth with a line-drive home run to center and tallied three more runs, including a two-run homer, in the sixth.
The extra runs proved important as Coastal mounted a rally in the seventh. Dominik led off with a single and went to second on an error. Cassidy Brzozowski walked, Dominik moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Sara Rasley. Taylor Harris then followed with an infield single and another wild pitch plated Brzozowski to make it 7-3. Quolas then walked to load the bases for Hayden. She grounded back to the pitcher, but a throwing error at the plate allowed Rasley to score before a Murray State got a groundball double play to end the game.
Dominik (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings. Murray State pitcher Mason Robinson held Coastal to one hit through the first six innings before holding on in the seventh.
Coastal returns to action next weekend for its final home tournament. The Chanticleers will host Loyola Chicago and Mount St. Mary's on Friday, Feb. 27, beginning at 3 p.m.
