Chanticleers Drop Two Close Games Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 March 7, 2015

Bethune-Cookman Box Score | Hofstra Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Coastal Carolina softball team suffered a pair of defeats in tight, low-scoring games Saturday at the Florida Atlantic Tournament, falling to Bethune-Cookman 2-1 in eight innings before a 2-0 decision to Hofstra.

The defeats for the Chanticleers (12-11) were their seventh and eighth of the season by one or two runs.

Coastal took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third of the day's opener. Kailey Mellen was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and scored just ahead of the tag on an RBI single to right by Morgan Noad. The RBI was her 106th, tying for ninth on the program's career list.

Bethune-Cookman tied the game with a two-out hit of its own in the fourth, after a throwing error on a fielder's choice put a Wildcat runner in scoring position.

The Chanticleers put the first two on in the bottom of the inning as Kory Hayden walked and Amanda Daneker singled, but a strikeout, a popout and a flyout ended the threat.

Coastal had another chance in the sixth as Kiana Quolas was hit with a pitch and pinchrunner Maicie Hahn was moved to second on a sacrifice by Hayden. Daneker followed by dropping a single in to shallow right and took second on the throw, putting two in scoring position, but two popouts followed.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mellen hit a one-out double to right but Bethune-Cookman reliever Sabrina Anguiano escaped again with two groundouts, as Noad was called out on a close play on the second one.

With the international tiebreaker in play in the eighth, Bethune drew a leadoff walk to put two on and they moved up on a sacrifice. Mariah Davis, the Wildcats' leading hitter then singled up the middle to score the go-ahead run. The second runner was thrown out at home by centerfielder Devon Steiner as Noad applied the tag up the line. A groundout then ended the inning.

In the Chants' half, Quolas reached to start when her sacrifice turned into a hit with no fielder covering first. Hayden then sent a grounder to the right side, but the Bethune second baseman threw home and Noad was called out again on another close play. Daneker was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Dominik flied out to shallow left and Annie Robinson fouled out on the ninth pitch of her at-bat.

Coastal finished the game with nine runners left on base, six of them in scoring position, and 15 of the Chanticleers' outs were in the air. Daneker had two of team's five hits. Dominik suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run. She gave up six hits, struck out two and walked two.

Coming off that defeat, the Chants got some bad luck to start the game against Hofstra as the Pride started the bottom of the first with two straight infield hits. They then capitalized when two walks and an RBI groundout followed for the game's only runs.

The Chants were unable to string hits together the rest of the way and finished with four just four singles against Hofstra starter Morgan Lashley. Daneker collected her third hit of the day with a leadoff single in the second. Hayden, Hahn and Mellen added hits in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Noad drew a walk in the sixth and Hayden narrowly missed a tying home run, pulling it just foul.

Quolas kept CCU in the game and suffered the tough loss. She allowed just six singles, with three of them infield hits.

The Chants played without Bri Chiusano, who sat out with an injury. Coastal finishes off their play in the tournament on Sunday with another game against No. 11/12 Florida State at 10 a.m.
