CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team took a split decision on Saturday in its mixed doubleheader at the Battle at the Beach tournament. First, the Chanticleers had a 7-0 win over UMKC before suffering a 2-1 loss versus UNCG.

Coastal (6-3) will return to the field tomorrow to face UNC Greensboro to close out the Battle at the Beach. First pitch is set for 12:30 pm.

In game one, Coastal took a 2-0 lead over UMKC in the first. Taty Forbes drew a leadoff walk, then Alexis Alvino (3-for-3) lined a single. Forbes and Alvino stole bases then, thanks to an error, Forbes advanced home to score. Later, Timi Tooley's sac fly scored Alvino.

In the bottom of the third inning, CCU increased its advantage to make it 5-0. Forbes delivered a single, stole second then moved to third thanks to a sac bunt from Alvino to put the Chants in scoring position. Later, Tooley smacked a RBI single to left to send Forbes to the plate. Kailey Mellen followed with an RBI double to score both pinch runner Michaela McAuley and Tooley.

The Chanticleers added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Amanda Daneker hit a sacrifice fly to plate Forbes and make the score 6-0.

Mackenzie Budinger hammered an RBI single to bring home pinch runner Lauren Fedorchak and provide the eventual final score 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Rahach (3-1) pitched a nearly perfect game for the second night in a row, throwing a complete game shutout. She allowed only one hit and two walks with six strikeouts over her seven innings.

In game two, Coastal and UNC Greensboro went three straight scoreless innings until the fourth.

UNC Greensboro pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fourth for the 2-0 lead thanks to Jordan Gontram's two-run shot over the centerfield fence.

Coastal responded with a solo home run from Tooley in the in the bottom of the fourth to cut its deficit in half, 2-1.

However, that is all either team could muster the rest of the game to give the Spartans the win.

Ashley Guillette (1-2) suffered the loss. She threw 6.2 innings and allowed only two hits, one being the two-run home run. She did record seven strikeouts. Devin Wallace closed out the game pitching 0.1 innings.
