ATLANTA, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team's 2018 season came to a close Friday evening with a four-set loss (17-25, 15-25, 25-22, 20-25) to sixth-seeded Arkansas State in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championship.
The Chanticleers finish the season 12-13 overall. Arkansas State advances to face No. 3 Appalachian State in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship on Saturday.
The Red Wolves hit .310 as a team and had three players finish in double digits in kills. Carlisa May led the way with 18 kills at a .359 pace. Macey Putt followed with 13 kills and Madison Turner tallied 10.
Coastal's top three offensive players had similar numbers as
Anett Nemeth tied for the match high in kills with 18, and
Kyla Manning and
Ani Bozdeva had 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Nemeth also had 10 assists and 11 digs for her fifth triple-double of the season.
Arkansas State also led the match in digs (61-54) and blocks (12-4).
The Red Wolves used a run of five straight points to take a 15-8 lead midway through the first set, and ended the frame by winning four straight. The second set contained more lengthy runs for the lower seed as Arkansas State won six straight points to go in front 11-6, and later won seven of nine points to finish off the set.
Coastal won the third set behind a .378 hitting percentage and the six kills each of Nemeth and Manning. The Chants fought off an early deficit and eventually took a 17-15 lead following a 5-1 run. Arkansas State managed to tie the set at 19-19, but Coastal never fell behind as it won six of the final nine points.
The fourth set was tied 11 times before the Red Wolves won three straight points to take a 17-15 lead. The lead remained with the Red Wolves down the homestretch as May recorded a trio of kills and a block assist to finish out the match.
