MOBILE, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina beach volleyball team split its pair of matches Friday afternoon at the Spring Hill Invitational to open the 2019 season. The Chants fell to Spring Hill, 3-2, to begin the day, but rebounded nicely with a 4-1 win over Southern Mississippi in their evening match.
Coastal (1-1) plays a second pair of matches on Saturday against Spring Hill and Southern Miss.
Match 1 – Spring Hill
The Chants lost a tough 3-2 decision in their opening match against Spring Hill. Coastal picked up its two points on the second and third courts.
Aleksandra Djuric and
Shelby Ladewig won a straight-sets match at No. 3, defeating Caroline Herrara and Allison Weimer 21-17, 21-16.
On court two,
Anaiah Boyer and
Lucy Campbell split the first two sets with Brittany Bilotti and Taylor Hurst before winning the deciding set 15-11.
Payton Gidney/Kassandra Fairly defeated

Sydney Alvis at No. 1; Sarah Senft/Emily Greim bested
Kate Federico/
Tanner Gauthier at No. 4; and Emmarose Neibert/Emily Sullivan topped Kaylin Eske/

Match 2 – Southern Miss
After their tough loss to Spring Hill in the day's first match, the Chants responded well with a 4-1 win against Southern Miss, which was playing its first match in program history.
All but one of Coastal's four points were won in three sets. It was Nemeth/Eske that provided the straight-sets win for the Chants on the fifth court, 21-18, 21-10.
Djuric/Ladewig picked up their second win of the day at No. 3, defeating Piper Matsumoto/Kellie Garraway, 15-21, 22-20, 15-21.
In Coastal's wins on the first and fourth courts, the Chanticleer duos also lost their first sets before pulling back in front to take the points.
Hardeman/Alvis responded to a 12-21 loss in the first set at No. 1 by winning the next two, 21-19, 15-13.
The No. 4 match went to extra points in the third set, with Federico/Gauthier ultimately taking the point 15-21, 21-13, 16-14.
