ROCK HILL, S.C. – Day two of the Winthrop Invitational continued on Friday afternoon as the combined events continued and the Chanticleers track and field team earned first-place finishes from
Kahlim Denmark and
Kelsey Briggs.
Men
In the 100-meter prelims, the Chanticleers placed three runners into Saturday's finals. Senior
Kahlim Denmark led the way with the best overall time in the event with a 10.50 (0.6). Junior
Devin Pringle finished second with a time of 10.56 (3.4) and newcomer to the team,
Hakeem Allen finished with a fourth-place prelim time of 10.61 (4.1). Freshman
Donavan Goode placed inside the top ten but unable to move to the finals as the freshman ended at 10.75 (4.3).
Denmark also earned a spot into Saturday's 200-meter finals. The Hanahan native finished with the second-best preliminary time of 21.42 (2.3).
Last weekend,
Erik Eckleben marked a personal best 7.67 meters and a first-place finish in the long jump at the
Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, but the junior this week fell short of that mark as he came in fourth place with a distance of 7.40 meters (1.1). Teammate
Christian Johnson competed in the event as the sophomore notched a distance of 6.64 meters (1.9), just placing him inside the top 20.
Kieran Moore reached the top 20 in the shot put as the senior threw 13.92 meters.
On day two of the decathlon,
Zahir Scott was on display for Coastal Carolina. In his best finish of the day, the Hagerstown, Maryland native had a third-place finish with a time of 4:53.19 in the 1500 meters. In the discus, the freshman finished with a distance of 18.75 meters. The sophomore finished the 110-meter hurdles in 11
th place in the event with a time of 19.08 (2.7). Scott completed the pole vault in seventh place on his eighth throw, reaching a height 3.25 meters. In the javelin, Scott tossed 28.17 meters in the second of three rounds. After day two and ten events, Scott finished the decathlon with 4440 points and a tenth-place finish.
Women
Kelsey Briggs took home a first place finish in the finals of the long jump when she reached 5.77 meters (3.5) on her sixth attempt of the day.
Sophomore
Eleni Frommann moved into Saturday's finals of the 100 meters. The Jena, Germany native finished the prelims with a time of 12.14 (5.1).
Airika McCaskill also earned herself a top 20 finish in the shot put as the freshman reached 11.88 meters.
In the women's 5000 meters,
Giovanna Leone was one of 45 runners and finished just inside the top 30 with a time of 19.37.64
Day three of the Winthrop Invitational will start at 9:00 a.m. with the women's triple jump and will finish up with the men's 4x400 in the late afternoon.
