TROY, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina women's volleyball team was undone by untimely errors on Friday night in a 3-1 road loss to the Troy Trojans (23-25, 20-25, 25-18, 20-25) in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference East Division match.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 15-6 overall and 9-2 in the Sun Belt, while the win puts Troy at 14-9 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
The loss also snaps Coastal's winning streak over Troy at five straight matches and extends their losing streak in Troy, Alabama, to three-straight defeats.
Despite outhitting Troy .239 to .123, and posting 52 kills to their 49 for the match, the Chanticleers were hampered by 14 service errors, three block errors, and three ball-handling errors in the four-set loss.
The Chants also recorded a season-high 19.0 team blocks for the match.
Setter
Brigitta Petrenko finished the match with a double-double of 41 assists and 11 digs, while outside hitters
Ani Bozdeva and
Cheyenne Jones led the way with 17 and 14 kills apiece on the night. Bozdeva added seven digs and two blocks, while Jones matched
Ilse Sinnige with a team-high seven total blocks.
Sinnige added six kills and hit .500 for the match, while libero
Lina Perugini and outside hitter
Doris Carter joined Petrenko in double-digit digs with 15 and 10 each, respectively.
Troy had a trio of Trojans record double-digit kills in Julia Brooks with 15 spikes, Cheyenne Hayes with 11 putaways, and Tori Hester who posted a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.
The Trojans' Lacey Jeffcoat finished the match with a match-high 20 digs, while setter Amara Anderson picked up a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs on the night.
The Chants hit over .300 in two of the four sets - .306 in set one and .371 in set three – yet couldn't pull away from the Trojans.
On the road for the second consecutive weekend, the Chanticleers scored first on a kill from Bozdeva but fell behind early on a 7-1 run by the Trojans who took a 7-2 lead to start the first set on back-to-back CCU attack errors.
Three kills from
Jelena Prolic and two more from Jones over the next six rallies pushed the visitors in white and teal back into the set at 9-7 before a 5-2 spurt by the home team put the Trojans back on top by five at 14-9 to force a Coastal timeout.
Neither team would pull away from the other, as CCU trimmed the Trojans' lead to two at 16-14 only to see three-straight errors and a block by the Trojans at the net force another Coastal timeout with Troy in front at 20-14.
Coastal would get to as close as four at 21-17 and again at 24-20, yet ran out of time in its comeback bid to suffer a 25-20 first-set loss on the road.
While Jones led the Chants with six spikes in the first set, it would be Bozdeva who would post a Coastal team-high five kills in the second set, starting the game off with a kill and a 1-0 lead.
However, the next four points went in favor of Troy who used a 7-1 run to take a 7-2 lead on a block by Brooks and Anderson.
CCU answered with back-to-back kills from Jones and Prolic, and a 5-2 run to get to within two points at 9-7 of the Trojans, however, both points for Troy in the run were service errors from the Chants.
Playing from behind for most of the match, the Chants got to as close as two points at 10-8 on a block by Sinnige and Petrenko, and again at 16-14 on a Troy attack error but would see the Trojans answer each time with a string of points of their own to take a 20-14 lead and force a Coastal timeout.
Out of the break, the Trojans would refuse to let the Chants back into the set, holding the lead down the stretch en route to a 25-20 second-set win to take a 2-0 match lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Chants answered with an 8-1 run to start the third set, highlighted by kills from Bozdeva, Jones, and Carter, and blocks from
Madison Lowery, Jones, and Bozdeva.
After Troy closed the gap to four points at 9-5 on back-to-back errors by the visiting Chants, Coastal responded with another 8-1 spurt to take a double-digit lead at 16-6 on one of seven kills in the set from Bozdeva.
Following a Troy timeout, the Chants pushed the lead to as much as 11 and ran away for the 25-18 third-set win on a kill from Sinnige.
However, in the fourth set, the Trojans jumped out to a 9-1 lead, controlling the net with two kills each from Hayes, Halston Hillier, and Brooks, before the Chants ended the run with three-consecutive kills of their own to put the score at 9-4 in favor of Troy.
CCU continued to fight, cutting the Troy lead to three at 16-13 on a block by Petrenko, a block by
Nyla Shepherd, and a service ace from Petrenko to force a Troy timeout.
The timeout proved to be beneficial for the Trojans, as it halted the Chants' run and changed the momentum of the match, as Troy had an answer for every Coastal point or run for the remainder of the set, leading the rest of the way in the 25-20 set win to take the 3-1 match win.
The Chanticleers will wrap up their four-match road trip at South Alabama on Sunday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. ET in Mobile, Ala. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
