CONWAY, S.C. – The Chanticleer women's volleyball team looks to improve on their 3-2 start to the 2021 regular season as they host the Chanticleer Classic this weekend at the HTC Center.
Face coverings WILL BE required for admission to all indoor Coastal Carolina home athletic events for 2021-22. Coastal Carolina and the Department of Athletics are committed to providing a safe environment for the enjoyment of our patrons that attend our home intercollegiate athletic events. The Chanticleers will play three matches this weekend starting with a Thursday, Sept. 9 match versus East Carolina at 6 p.m. ET. The tournament will continue on Friday, but the CCU won't return to action until Saturday, Sept. 11, when they take on Radford and UNCW at 11 a.m ET and 6 p.m. ET, respectively. All three of the Chanticleer matches will be shown on ESPN+

LAST TIME OUT
- The Chanticleers went 2-1 last weekend in three matches at the Ole Miss Invitational. The Chanticleers defeated Northwestern State 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15) and the UTSA Roadrunners 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-15, 25-22), but fell to the host Ole Miss Rebels in straight sets 0-3 (18-25, 17-25, 29-31). Super senior Ani Bozdeva and Doris Carter were named to the all-tournament team.
CCU DOUBLE-DOUBLES
- Super senior Ani Bozdeva and Brigitta Petrenko added their first double-doubles of the season at the Ole Miss Invitational. Petrenko opened the weekend with 25 assists and 11 digs for her 11th career double-double. Bozdeva closed out the weekend versus UTSA with her fifth career double-double as she had 11 kills and 12 digs.
CCU DIGS PERUGINI
- Junior Lina Perugini ranks 26th in the nation at 5.21 digs per set. She had two 23-dig performances during the Ole Miss Invitational in wins over NSU and UTSA.
1000-KILL WATCH
- Four CCU players, Ella Saada, Doris Carter, Ani Bozdeva, and Cheyenne Jones, are on the verge of 1000 kills in their illustrious careers.
- Saada, a graduate transfer from Syracuse, comes into this weekend with 939 career kills after a 13-kill performance versus Northwestern State on Sept. 3.
- Carter, a graduate transfer from Alabama, has a career 922 kills. Carter led CCU in two of the three matches at the Ole Miss Invitational, including a career-high 14 kills on Sept. 4 versus UTSA.
- Bozdeva has spent three of her four seasons playing for the Chanticleers, where she has amassed 873 putaways. The Razlog, Bulgaria native, tallied two double-digit kill performances at the Ole Miss Invitational, including her fifth career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
- Jones, the Missoula, Mont., native, transferred from UTEP this season, where the outside hitter had 805 career kills. Jones picked up her second double-digit kill match of the season on Sept. 4 versus UTSA as she had 11 kills.
PETRENKO CONTINUES TO MOVE UP IN THE RECORD BOOK
- Junior setter Brigitta Petrenko is ninth all-time in school history with 1885 career assists. She currently is 115 assists shy of the 2000 career mark and 182 shy of 2014 graduate Sam Skyrd's 2067 tally for eighth all-time.
HAMPTON RETURNS TO CCU
- UNCW head coach Dottie Hampton returns to the HTC Center after spending two seasons (2018-19) with CCU. Hampton helped guide the Chants to the 2019 Sun Belt Championship match as an assistant under head coach Jozsef Forman.
SERIES HISTORY – ECU
- The Chanticleers have a 5-12 record all-time versus the Pirates. The last time the two schools faced off was on Sept. 15, 2012, during the East Carolina Invitational. CCU defeated ECU in five sets behind all-tournament team standout Meghan Laffin who posted 19 kills.
SERIES HISTORY – RADFORD
- The Chanticleers have won 32 of the 50 matches played between the two schools. Coastal has won the last three matches in the series, including a 3-0 sweep of Highlanders at Radford on Oct. 16, 2015. Three players, including Eszter Nagy (12), Leah Hardeman (11), and Annayka Legros (10), had double-digit kill matches in the win.
SERIES HISTORY – UNCW
- The two schools have played virtually an even all-time series over the years as UNCW holds a slight advantage of 24-20. Even though the Seahawks have the edge in the series history, CCU has won 13 of the last 15 matches. In the last match between the schools, Hardeman led the Chants against the Pirates on Sept. 15, 2015, with 22 kills in the four-set 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22 win.
A GLIMPSE AT ECU
- ECU is off to an 0-3 start this season with losses last weekend on the road at Wofford, N.C. State, and North Carolina.
- The Pirates had a depleted lineup in the three losses. Notable players Bri Wood, Sydney Kleinman, and Janiece Jefferies all missed time during the first weekend of play.
- After three matches, senior Natalie Tyson leads the team with 18 kills, and defensive specialist Anaiah Jones leads the Pirates with 28 assists.
- Defensively, Tia Shum leads ECU with 22 digs while Amelia Davis leads the Pirates with 11 blocks.
A GLIMPSE AT RADFORD
- The Highlanders have gotten off to a 1-5 start in 2021.
- Radford has lost its last three matches versus Cleveland State, Evansville, and Morehead State.
- Grace Green reached her 1000th career kill in the 16-25, 16-25, 25-16, 16-25 loss to Morehead State.
- Middle blocker Kennedy Johnson leads the Highlanders on the season with 67 points and 45 kills.
- Setter Tiffany Burge quarterbacks the Highlanders attack with team-high 115 assists on the year.
A GLIMPSE AT UNCW
- The Seahawks have gotten off to a 1-4 start in 2021.
- The last time out, UNCW fell to the University of Jacksonville in back-to-back nights on Sept. 3-4, 3-2, and 3-1. Brianna Haggerty had a combined 22 kills in the two matches versus the Dolphins.
- Haggerty and Katie Lanz are co-leaders of the UNCW squad with 51 kills on the season.
- Along with being one of the leaders in kills, Haggerty also leads the team with 47 digs.
- Setter Claire Sawyer leads the Seahawks with 97 assists on the season.
