Chants will compete at the conference championships on Friday
CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women's and men's cross country teams are set to compete at the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships in Foley, Ala., on Friday, Oct. 28. The championship meet was moved up a day due to the forecast of inclement weather in Alabama on Saturday.
The women's 5k race will begin at 5:02 p.m. ET, while the men's 8k meet will follow at 6 p.m. ET. It will be held at the Graham Creek Nature Preserve in Foley, Ala.
The women's team will send eight runners to the conference championship meet, led by returners Molly Jones, Amilia Wise-Sweat, and Ashley Rulison. The trio are the only three Chants to have raced in a Sun Belt Championship meet heading into this weekend.
This season, Jones has recorded three top-two finishes, having won the 5k meet at the Firetower Project Open and crossed the finish line in first at the 6k ECU Pirate Invitational. Wise-Sweat has turned in two personal-best times of 18:42.2 in the 5k and 23:45.0 in the 6k this fall, while Rulison picked up a career-best time of 18:47.9 in last year's Sun Belt Conference Championship meet.
Joining the three returners are newcomers Ellie Wolski, Kylee Denver, Ella Lehmann, Tiarra Smith, and Taylor Houston.
Wolski has three top-20 finishes so far this fall season, including placing seventh overall at the Carolina Challenge in the first meet of the year, while Denver has raced in all three events for the Chanticleers this fall, turning in a season-best time of 19:55.5 at the Firetower Project Open.
Lehmann, Smith, and Houston have all run for the Teal and Bronze in two meets this season and will be looking to make an impact in their first Sun Belt Conference Championship meet on Friday.
On the men's side, the Chants will send five runners to the championship meet in Tomas Duncan, Jack Benoit, Ethan Blackwelder, Trey Kraimer, and Hunter White.
Both Duncan and Benoit competed in last year's conference championship meet, crossing the finish line with times of 27:19.8 and 28:12.0, respectively.
Duncan, who has been the top performer for the Chanticleers this season, is coming off a 31st-place finish at the ECU Pirate Invitational, where he turned in a personal-best time of 26:21.5, while Benoit has raced in only one meet this fall season, turning in a time of 31:12.7 at the Firetower Project Open.
Blackwelder will take part in his fourth meet of the 2022 fall season, having registered personal-best times of 19:02.3 (5k) and 26:33.2 (8k), while transfers Kraimer and White will both be competing in their first SBC Championship meet.
