CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina cross country teams will open up the 2022 fall season on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina at the Springdale Racecourse in Camden, S.C.
The women's 5k event will start at 9 a.m. ET with the men's 5k race to follow at 9:45 a.m. ET.
Running for the Chanticleers on the women's side are returners Molly Jones, Amilia Wise-Sweat, and Ashley Rulison, while four newcomers will make their CCU debuts in Ellie Wolski, Kylee Denver, Taylor Houston, and Tiarra Smith.
A 2021 All-Sun Belt second-team performer in cross country, Jones is in her third year with the Teal and Bronze and is one of the experienced leaders on the team alongside Rulison, a fourth-year senior.
Wise-Sweat is in her second season with the Chants and was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the week last year on Sept. 29 after leading the Chants with a season-best time of 18:48.0 at the Queen City Invite (5k).
Smith is a transfer from Winston-Salem State, while Wolski was a member of the Coastal women's soccer team as a true freshman last year. Both Denver and Houston are true freshmen making their collegiate debuts this weekend.
For the men's race, returners Tomas Duncan and Ethan Blackwelder will lead a young group of Chanticleers in the season opening meet.
Duncan turned in a season-best time of 27:19.8 at the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships (8k) to wrap up last season, while Blackwelder did run for the Chants in cross country in 2021 but competed for the track & field team in the spring of 2022.
Joining the sophomore duo on the course will be newcomers Trey Kraimer, Hunter White, and Camren Stamp. Kraimer is a transfer from Western Kentucky, White is a transfer from nearby Erskine, and Stamp is a true freshman.
