Chanticleers Close Out Fight in the Fort with 3-0 Win over Memphis

Coastal Carolina volleyball will return to action in CofC Classic
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team returned to its winning ways by closing out the Fight in the Fort in Fort Worth, Texas with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-23) seep over the Memphis Tigers on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 4-2 on the year, while the Tigers fell to 3-2 with the loss.
Coastal's offense was led by super senior Ella Saada (15) and sophomore Agata Lesiak (12) with double-digit kills each, while graduate student Paulina Perez Rosas and super senior Christina Nance had nine kills apiece. Senior Brigitta Petrenko finished with 32 assists, five service aces, and four spikes to aid the Chants in the sweep.
Defensively for Coastal, defensive specialist Lina Perugini had 11 digs, while Lesiak, Saada, and Perez Rosas finished with eight, seven, and six digs, respectively. Perez Rosas had the lone block for the Chanticleers.
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, as Petrenko opened the match with a service ace to set the tone. CCU's Lesiak highlighted the early surge with three spikes, while Saada, Petrenko, and Nance each tallied a kill.
The Tigers answered with a pair of points on back-to-back kills by Anna Haynes and Gigi Crescenzo to pull within two at 8-6 before the Chanticleers countered with a 9-2 run for the 15-8 advantage. Four Memphis miscues, along with kills by Lesiak, Saada, Petrenko, and Perez Rosas highlighted the Coastal surge. The two teams traded points to 19-12 before Coastal used a 4-0 run to go up 23-12 sparked by kills from Lesiak and Nyla Shepherd. CCU's Saada picked up the winning point with her set-ending spike at 25-15.
Coastal opened set two with a 10-1 run highlighted by Petrenko's kill and two service aces to take control of the set. The two squads played even until Coastal used a 3-0 run as Nance and Shepherd sandwiched a Tigers' miscue with spikes to put CCU up at 22-11. The Chanticleers claimed the set-two victory at 25-14 as Saada finished the win with a kill.
Memphis did not go down easily and jumped out to the early 5-4 lead in the third set. In a back-and-forth set in which neither team could muster more than a three-point lead. Coastal laid claim to set three as Saada controlled the set for the Chanticleers with seven kills to lead the Chants, including the final point for the 25-23 match clinching victory.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, as the Chants will take on the Wofford Terriers at 4:30 p.m. ET in the opening day of the College of Charleston Classic.
