Volleyball Uses Five Sets to Win Seventh Straight Match

Coastal Carolina remains unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference action

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team needed five sets to pick up its seventh consecutive win with a 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-13) win over the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday evening in Conway, S.C., to remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 12-7 overall and 7-0 in SBC play while the Monarchs drop to 9-12 on the year and 1-6 in conference action.
 
CCU's Jasmine Rivest led the offense with 18 kills with Lauren Malone and Jalyn Stout finishing with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Stout tallied a team-high 24 assists, while Cagla Bengi added 22 assists to spark the offense.
 
Defensively, Dilara Unal paced the defense with three blocks while Rivest added two stops at the net. Libero Sydney Lewis tallied a match-high 17 digs, while Rivest recorded her 10th double-double and Stout tallied her sixth triple-double of the year with 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
 
Old Dominion was led by Myah Conway with a match-high 24 kills, while Tessa Mati added 10 kills. Teresa Atilano had a match-high 47 assists and 11 digs. Leeanne Lowery led the defense with five blocks while Conway and Kate Kilpatrick tallied 15 and 13 digs.
 
In the opening set, the two teams traded the first eight points with the score even at 4-4 as Rivest led the Chanticleer offense with a pair of kills. The Monarchs used a 5-3 burst to take a 9-7 advantage just to see Coastal Carolina even the score at 10-10, highlighted by a pair of spikes by Malone.
 
The Chants pushed in front 17-12 with a 7-2 run, sparked by a kill by Valentina Varani and capped by a putdown by Rivest that forced ODU to call its first timeout of the set. The Monarchs' Conway responded with back-to-back kills coming out of the break to cut the deficit to 17-14 just to see CCU take a six-point advantage with a 5-2 spurt that included a pair of spikes by Stout.
 
However, Old Dominion forced Coastal to call its first timeout of the set with after a 5-2 run with the Chants leading 23-20. The two teams traded the next four points with the Chanticleers claiming a 1-0 match lead with the 25-22 first-set win.
 
In the second set, ODU jumped to a 6-4 lead just before Coastal used a 3-0 burst to take a 7-6 lead, highlighted by a pair of kills by Stout. The Monarchs responded with a 10-3 run to push in front 16-10, that was followed with the two teams trading the next 12 points to give Old Dominion a 23-15 advantage.
 
CCU closed the margin to three at 23-20 with five unanswered points that included kills by Rivest, Malone, and Agata Lesiak. However, the Monarchs would outscore the Chants 2-1 to even the match at 1-1 with the 25-21 second-set win.
 
The third set saw Coastal take a 2-0 lead before ODU would use an 8-1 run to force the Chanticleers to call their first timeout of the set. Coming out of the break, Coastal narrowed the margin to one at 10-9, ignited by a Malone spike and capped by a Rivest block. The Monarchs responded with a 7-2 run to take 17-11 lead just to see the two teams trade the next six rallies and ODU leading 20-14.
 
The Chants cut the ODU advantage to three at 21-18 with a 4-1 run that included a service ace and kill by Bengi. However, the visitors from Norfolk, Va., forced CCU to call its second timeout of the set after a pair of points to lead 23-18. The Monarchs matched the Chanticleers point for point for the third-set win at 25-20 to lead the match 2-1.
 
In the fourth set, the Chants raced out to a 5-2 advantage, highlighted by a pair of kills by Lesiak and Rivest. Old Dominion responded with a 3-1 spurt to cut the deficit to 6-5 just to see the Chants increase their lead to 11-6 with a 5-1 run that included the Monarchs calling their first timeout of the set. The two squads traded the next 10 points with CCU holding a 15-12 advantage before CCU pushed in front 18-12 with a 3-0 surge, sparked by a Stout kill and topped off by a Rivest service ace.
 
ODU fought back to cut the Chanticleer lead to five at 21-16 just to see the Ladies in Teal take a 24-16 advantage with a kill by Rivest and a service ace by Bailee Earnhardt. After a Monarch point, Rivest evened the match at 2-2 for the Chants with a kill to claim a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
 
In the fifth and final set, the Chanticleers raced out to a 5-1 lead, highlighted by a pair kills by Lesiak that included a timeout by the Monarchs. After a 3-0 ODU run, Coastal used a 3-0 burst to take an 8-4 lead, sparked by a spike by Stout and capped by a Unal block.
 
The Monarchs responded with a 4-2 burst to trail 10-9 that the Chants responded with a third 3-0 run to lead 13-9, highlighted by another service ace by Earnhardt that forced ODU to call its final timeout. Old Dominion cut the deficit to one at 14-13 with a 4-1 surge just to see Coastal force a Monarch miscue for the 15-13 fifth-set and 3-2 match win.
 
Coastal Carolina will return the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., for its next matchup versus Old Dominion on Saturday, October 14. The opening serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 14.
