Chants Make Statement at Buccaneer Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2023 fall season at the Buccaneer Open, hosted by Charleston Southern.

CCU dominated in the women's 4k event, finishing atop the overall leaderboard. Senior Molly Jones and redshirt junior Ellie Wolski each crossed the finish line in the first and second positions, with times of 15:00.3 and 15:26.1, respectively. The women's team also saw all nine runners finish in the top-35 of 69 total athletes.

Marking their return for the Chants, juniors Amilia Wise-Sweat and Tiarra Smith finished 11^th and 35^th, with times of 16:32.0 and 18:42.9.

Making their CCU debuts, freshmen Addison Laughlin crossed the finish line with a sixth-place finish in 15:54.8, Mary Kathryn Huddleston finished 19^th in 16:56.9, Erin McQuitty finished 22^nd in 17:01.1, Olivia Goeser placed 27^th in 17:29.6, and Katelyn Porter claimed 30^th in 17:51.6.

In the men's 6k event, Coastal finished second behind host Charleston Southern, with freshman Adam Groves, in his first event with the Chants, leading the way among the CCU runners, finishing 10^th with a 19:12.8 time.

Coming in behind Groves was New Mexico transfer Nehemiah Cionelo in 11^th with a 19:20.4 time and juniors Trey Kraimer in 12^th with a 19:38.6 time, George Werner Jr. in 13^th with a 19:40.0 time, Ethan Blackwelder in 28^th with a 20:29.4 time, and Jack Benoit in 29^th with a 20:31.9 time.

In the opening account to their CCU careers, freshmen Sterling Sellier, Jackson Brungart, and Sean Clegg finished 15^th, 18^th and, 46^th, respectively.

The Chants' next meet is Friday, Sept. 15 at the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, N.C., hosted by North Carolina State.
