Chants only seven strokes ouf of the top five

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women's golf team sits in a tie for 9th place at the Lady Paladin Invitational after shooting a nine-over 297 in the first round at the Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.., on Friday.

Two first-year Chanticleers led CCU in scoring on the first day of action as Hannah Karg shot an even-par 72 (37-35), which included three consecutive birdies on holes 11 through 13. Varatkarn Kunkaew shot a two-over 74 (36-38). Karg is tied for 18th and Kunkaew is tied for 32nd.

Junior Sara Sarrion finished her first round tied for 45th after carding a three-over 75 (36-39), ending her day on back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18.

Luisa Gibson (40-36) and Isabella Galla (36-40) are tied for 57th after both recorded a four-over 76.

Isabella Spinazze, playing as an individual, finished her day shooting a six-over 78 (37-41) to end the day tied for 71st.

The host team Furman and Western Kentucky finished the first round of action tied at three-under 285. Augusta finished the round in third place with a one-under 287, while North Florida and James Madison rounded out the top five, finishing the round tied with a two-over 290.

Only six strokes separated the next eight teams led by Xavier with a six-over 294. Nevada and Georgia State are tied for seventh after shooting a seven-over 295. Coastal Carolina leads a trio of teams tied for ninth with a nine-over 297, along with Old Dominion and UNCW.

East Carolina is 12th after shooting a 10-over 298 with Charlotte two strokes back in 13th at 12-over 300. Memphis and Tulane are tied for 14th (+16, 304) with Daytona State rounding out the field with a 30-over 318.

The second round is scheduled to begin Saturday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
