CONWAY, S.C. — The Coastal Carolina softball team ended a 13-year NCAA Tournament drought, earning a spot in the Durham Regional of the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament, the NCAA selection committee announced Sunday evening.
The selection marks Coastal's seventh NCAA postseason appearance, with previous trips in 1992, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006, and most recently in 2012 under head coach
Kelley Green.
The regional in Durham includes No. 14 seed Duke (38-16), Georgia (31-20), and Howard (31-18). Coastal is set to face Georgia in the first round of regional play on May 16 at 2:30 p.m. ET, while Duke will face Howard at noon ET.
The Chanticleers enter the postseason with a 41-17 (13-11 Sun Belt) record after winning their first-ever Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship against James Madison on Saturday. Coastal ranks eighth in the NCAA with 86 home runs, and pitching ace
Nicolette Picone leads the nation with 28 wins.
Coastal holds an undefeated 2-0 record against No. 14 seed Duke, is 0-2 versus Georgia, and will meet Howard for the first time in program history.
Each of the 16 regionals features four teams playing in a double-elimination format. The regionals will be played from Friday, May 16, to Sunday, May 18. The winner of the Durham Regional will face the winner of the Gainesville Regional which features No. 3 seed Florida (43-14), Florida Atlantic (44-10), Mercer (38-24), and Georgia Tech (27-21) in the super regional.
