CONWAY, S.C. —
Joshua Beadle buried a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left in the third overtime to cap a marathon afternoon at the HTC Center as Coastal Carolina outlasted UMass, 94-91, Saturday in the SBC–MAC Challenge.
Beadle finished with 23 points, while
Rasheed Jones scored 26 and
AJ Dancler added 24 as the Chanticleers (15-11) earned the program's first triple-overtime win since 1977.
"That's one of the crazier endings to a game that I've seen, trying to put players in situations to make plays on both sides," Chanticleers head coach
Justin Gray said. "I'm so blessed to be the head coach at Coastal and be part of what we're building along with everybody in our program.
"You want to take a deep breath, but you want to stay present in these moments because these guys work extremely hard for them. Today is one of those games where they've created a memory that will last a lifetime."
Coastal trailed 32-21 at halftime but flipped the game in the second half behind an 8 of 12 performance from 3-point range in the second half.
The Chanticleers, trailing by nine with 7:38 remaining, erased the deficit with an 11-2 run, punctuated when Jones knocked down a fast-break 3 to tie the game 59-59 with 3:00 remaining in regulation.
Dancler then put Coastal in front 61-59 with 1:37 left on a pull-up jumper in the lane, but UMass (15-10) forced overtime when K'Jei Parker hit a game-tying 3 with 13 seconds remaining to make it 64-64.
In the first overtime, Coastal fell behind before getting the equalizer at the horn as Dancler knocked down a contested, one-footed 3 at the buzzer to send the game to a second extra period tied at 75-all.
The teams traded baskets deep into the second overtime. Beadle's 3 with 1:34 remaining gave Coastal an 82-77 edge, but UMass responded and tied the game again on Marcus Banks' 3-pointer as time expired, knotting the score at 83-83 and forcing a third overtime.
In the third overtime, Jones opened the scoring with a 3 for an 86-83 Coastal lead, and Dancler added another from beyond the arc to push the Chanticleers ahead 91-86 with 1:10 to play. UMass rallied once more, tying the game on Banks' 3 with 25 seconds left.
Beadle delivered the final answer, drilling the winner with 2 seconds remaining — his third 3-pointer of the day — before Coastal secured the final defensive rebound as the horn sounded.
"[The defender] was kind of back playing on his heels, anticipating a drive," Beadle said. "I knew if I hit him with a move, he wouldn't be able to get a good closeout, and I took advantage of it."
After shooting 25.8% in the first half, Coastal shot 50.9% (27 of 53) the rest of the game.
Reggie Hill posted his first double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Coastal finished 16 of 34 from 3-point range and committed just 10 turnovers in 55 minutes.
Parker led UMass with 31 points off the bench, while Banks added 21, and Leonardo Bettiol scored 17. Daniel Hankins-Sanford pulled down 20 rebounds for the Minutemen.
The Chanticleers return to Sun Belt play Thursday, Feb. 12, at Louisiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET in Lafayette, La.
