CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team ended the 2021 regular-season tallying its third consecutive victory over the College of Charleston 2-1 on Wednesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium, headlined by Michael Fowler's second straight brace.
With the win, the Chanticleers finished the regular season at 6-4-4 overall and 3-1-4 in Conference USA play while the Cougars dropped to 5-8-3 overall and 1-6-1 in CAA play.
"I thought it was a very difficult game," head coach Shaun Docking said. "The College of Charleston came to play. I give them a ton of credit. Likewise, I am really pleased with how we handled it. It was great to see us come from a goal down to win the game. Another great group effort."
The College of Charleston notched the contest's first goal in the 19th minute as Jake Nicholson sent in a corner kick that Daniel Pereira headed into the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage early.
Fowler connected on his first of two goals just 10 minutes after CofC to find the equalizer as he collected a ball from fellow teammate Nick Itopoulous in the 32nd minute. The two teams headed into the half tied at 1-all.
In traffic, Fowler rebounded a shot from Itopoulous that connected with the right post and went sailing into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season to put Coastal up 2-1 in the 56th minute. The Cougars attacked, taking two shots in the final minutes but were unable to convert.
The Chanticleers finished the night with a 13-7 shooting advantage and a 5-1 edge in shots on frame. Fowler finished the night with a match-leading five shots (three on goal), while Emile Rzepecki recorded three shots for CCU. The Cougars did however find the advantage in saves at 3-0. Notably, both teams ended the night with six corner kicks.
Coastal Carolina will now get set for the Conference USA tournament that kicks off Nov. 10-14 in Charlotte, N.C.
