Chants Host Camels on Wednesday at St. John Stadium

Coastal will host its only midweek of the season on Wednesday

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina softball team looks to add to their two-game winning streak on Wednesday, April 21, as they host the Campbell Camels at St. John Stadium in their only midweek doubleheader of the season.

The first pitch for game one is scheduled at 4 p.m. ET followed by game two, 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one.

The Chanticleers come into the two-game series as they have won four of their last five games and have an overall record of 13-19, while the Camels are 20-11 this season.

Health and safety protocols for attendance will remain in place to include, but not limited to:
  • Admission to home games will be managed by a team list only and no tickets will be sold.
  • Face coverings WILL BE required.
  • Creation of "buffer" around the field and/or team areas (i.e. dugouts, bullpens).
  • When concessions are available, cashless or touchless payment options (when applicable) will be available along with pre-packaged food and beverage options.
  • Increased cleaning of high traffic areas during events.
  • No printed gameday programs or rosters.

HOME SWEET HOME
  • Wednesday's doubleheader marks the only midweek doubleheader at home this season for Coastal Carolina. CCU is 6-8 at home inside the friendly confines of St. John Stadium.
  • The Chanticleers have won their last two midweek games at the College of Charleston on April 13 and have a record of 3-3 record.
  • CCU is batting .277 in 14 games at home compared to .286 in 16 games on the road this season.
  • Junior Mackenzie Beyer leads the Chanticleers with a .355 batting average in 14 home games this season. The Chanticleer catcher has tallied four home runs, 13 RBI, and forced five walks in her 31 at-bats.
  • Senior Makiya Thomas is batting .354 (17-for-48), five doubles, two homers, five walks, and seven stolen bases in 14 Coastal's home games.
  • The Chants' pitching staff has a 5.02 in 14 home games compared to a 4.23 ERA in 16 games on the road this season.
  • Senior Kaitlin Beasley-Polko leads the Chanticleer pitching staff with a 3.80 home earned run average in seven appearances.

LOOKIN' BACK
  • The Chanticleers won their first conference series of the season as they took two of three games in Atlanta versus Georgia State. It was their first conference series win since they defeated Appalachian State, 2-1 at home in the 2019 season finale.
  • In game one on Saturday, the Chanticleers lost 3-2 in nine innings. It was the first extra-frame game CCU has played this season. The senior Beasley-Polko threw 8.2 innings, the longest of her career. The righty struck out 10 batters but allowed a walk-off wild pitch that secured the Panthers' win.
  • Starting pitcher Iyanla De Jesus and reliever Raelee Brabham combined to allow just three hits in the 6-3, game two, come-from-behind victory. Senior Taylor Sweigart blasted her first home run of the season, and Makiya Thomas had her only hit of the game in the sixth inning with a two-run double seal the Chanticleer victory.
  • Stavi Augur and Mary Sobataka blasted home runs in the 8-7 come-from-behind victory, while Courtney Dean got the game-winning hit in the top of the seventh to put a bow on the victory for the Chanticleers. Beasley-Polko pitched the final 2.2 innings to move into a tie for sixth place all-time with 46 wins, tying Christine Doyle ('06) and passed Vickie Dulaney ('99) and Lauren Yates ('03).

MASHING MAKIYA
  • On Tuesday, April 19, it was announced that senior Makiya Thomas was voted the Sun Belt Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
  • Thomas is coming off a week where she played in five games, hit in five straight, batted .455 (10-for-22) with seven RBI, three doubles, scored five runs, and 1.067 OPS.
  • The Tacoma, Wash., native had back-to-back games where she tied her career-high with three hits. On April 13, Thomas went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the 14-2 win at the College Charleston. Just four days later, on April 17, Thomas peppered the Georgia State pitching for her second-straight 3-for-5 game.
  • Thomas lefty bat has hit safely in her last six games, including 26 of the 32 Chanticleer games this season and 14 of her last 15.
  • Thomas is fourth in the conference with a .378 batting average, fourth with 14 stolen bases, is tied for third with 13 doubles, 24th with a .550 slugging percentage, and 17th with a .423 on-base percentage.
  • The senior outfielder is leading the team in eight offensive categories, including; batting average (.378), at-bats (111), hits (42), multi-hit games (13), runs scored (23), doubles (13), total bases (61), and stolen bases (14).
  • Thomas is one of two Chanticleers to be selected to the 2021 preseason All-Sun Belt team.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
  • Campbell is 20-11 overall and has won 13 of their last 14 games.
  • The last time out, the Camels swept Charleston Southern by the scores of 10-1, 6-1, and 2-1.
  • Bri Bryant led the Camels last weekend to a sweep of Charleston Southern with a .600 (6-for-10) batting average, three home runs, five runs scored, and two walks.
  • Georgeanna Barefoot leads the Campbell pitching staff this season with a 10-4 record, 10 complete games, three shutouts, 67 strikeouts, an opponent batting average of .198, and 84.1 innings pitched.

HISTORY AGAINST
  • The series dates back to 1987 when two schools played in the Big South Conference until 2016.
  • The longest win streak of any team is 15 games, held by Coastal from 1998-2012.
  • CCU holds the all-time series advantage, 54-17, but the Camels won the last meeting on February 9, 2020, as Coastal jumped out to a 3-0 lead after five innings with RBIs from Thomas, Augur, and Kassidy Smith. Campbell scored four times in the last two innings to earn the victory with two two-run home runs from Kynadi Tipler and Kiana Jones off Coastal starter Kaitlin Beasley-Polko.
