Rivest, Lesiak, and Stout Lead Chants to 3-1 Win Over ODU

Coastal Carolina wins eighth-consecutive match

CONWAY, S.C. – Jasmine Rivest, Agata Lesiak, and Jalyn Stout led the Coastal Carolina volleyball team to its eighth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16) over the Old Dominion Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center to remain unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play. With the win, the Chanticleers move to 13-7 overall and 8-0 in SBC play while the Monarchs drop to 9-13 on the year and 1-7 in conference action.
 
CCU's Rivest led the offense with 17 kills, while Lesiak and Stout finished with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Cagla Bengi tallied a team-high 23 assists with Stout adding 21 helpers to spark the offense.
 
Defensively, Rivest, Dilara Unal and Valentina Varani paced the Chanticleers with six blocks each while Lesiak added two stops at the net. Libero Sydney Lewis tallied a match-high 16 digs, while Stout tallied her seventh triple-double of the year with 12 digs.
 
Old Dominion was led by Elisa Maggi and Myah Conway with 17 kills apiece. Teresa Atilano had a match-high 44 assists and added 13 digs. Leeanne Lowery led the defense with six blocks while Maggi and Kate Kilpatrick tallied 14 and a team-high 15 digs.
 
In the opening set, ODU started with three quick tallies before Coastal answered with a 4-1 run to even the score at 4-4. After the two teams traded the next two rallies, the Monarchs used a 4-1 spurt to take a 9-6 lead just to see the Chants' Lesiak and Unal pull CCU within one at 9-8 with a block in the middle.
 
However, Old Dominion increased its lead to 12-9 with a 3-1 run only to see the Ladies in Teal take a 13-12 lead with a 4-0 burst, highlighted by a pair of kills by Rivest. Coastal maintained its one-point advantage at 15-14 after the two teams traded rallies just before the media break.
 
The Chanticleers used a 4-2 run to increase their lead to 19-16 sparked by a service ace by Rivest and capped off by a spike by Malone. The visitors from Norfolk, Va., evened the set at 19-19 with a 3-0 surge just before the two teams traded would trade the final next 10 rallies. Coastal claimed the opening set with Rivest and Varani getting a pair of stops at the middle of the net for the 25-23 first set win.
 
In the second set, the two teams traded the opening 10 points to remain even at 5-5 before the Chanticleers pushed in front at 9-7 with a 4-2 run, highlighted by a block by Unal. However, the Monarchs responded with a 5-2 burst to take a 12-11 lead just to see CCU respond with a 3-0 spurt to lead 14-12 sparked by a pair of kills by Stout and topped off by a Rivest spike.
 
Old Dominion evened the set at 14-14 with two quick points before a kill by Stout ignited a 4-1 surge that gave CCU an 18-15 lead and forced the Monarchs to call their first timeout after a kill by Lesiak. After the break, ODU used a 7-2 burst to take a 22-20 advantage that included a Coastal timeout.
 
CCU closed the margin to one at 22-21 just to see Old Dominion even the match at 1-1 with the 25-22 second-set win.
 
The third set saw ODU take a 6-4 lead before Coastal would use a 7-0 run that included the Monarchs to call their first timeout of the set, sparked by an unforced ODU miscue and capped by a spike by Rivest. Old Dominion stopped the run with a quick rally just to see the Chants respond with a 4-0 burst to lead 15-7, highlighted by a block Rivest and Varani.
 
ODU cut the CCU advantage to three at 19-16 with a 9-4 run that forced the Chants to call their first timeout. After the break, the two teams traded the next five rallies with Coastal leading 22-18 before the Monarchs cut the deficit to two at 22-20. The Chanticleers got a 3-1 spurt to take a 2-1 match advantage with the 25-21 third-set win, sparked by a Rivest kill and topped off by a spike by Stout.
 
In the fourth set final set, the Chanticleers doubled up the Monarchs at 10-5, highlighted by kills by Rivest, Stout, Malone, and Varani. After an ODU rally, Coastal used a 5-0 burst to take an 15-6 lead, ignited by a Rivest spike and capped by a Rivest service ace.
 
The Monarchs' Atilano put a kill down to cut the lead to 17-8 just to see the two squads trade the next six rallies with the Chants maintaining a 20-11 advantage. However, Old Dominion answered with a 5-2 surge to trail 22-16 just before CCU used a 3-0 run for the 25-16 fourth-set and 3-1 match win, highlighted by a block by Varani and Alicja Jaryszek.
 
Coastal Carolina will return the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., for its next matchup versus James Madison on Friday andSaturday, October 20-21. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Oct. 20 and 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 21.
