NORFOLK, Va. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was toppled 3-1 (12-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19) by the Old Dominion Monarchs on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk, Va. With the loss, the Chanticleers drop to 6-9 overall and 2-2 in the Sun Belt, while the Monarchs improve to 13-2 on the season and 2-0 in league play with the win.
Agata Lesiak led the Chanticleer offense with a match-high 14 kills, while
Lauren Malone and
Jalyn Stout tallied 12 and 11 kills. Stout totaled a match-high 21 assists with
Cagla Bengi adding 13 assists.
Defensively, CCU totaled eight blocks as
Dilara Unal stopped four kill attempts, while
Emma Van Elslande and
Valentina Varani totaled three blocks each at the net.
Sydney Lewis finished with 10 digs, and Stout added 11 digs to record her eighth triple-double of the season and 22nd of her career.
ODU was paced by Alice Munari with a team-high nine kills with Elisa Maggi, Bryanna Jones, and Myah Conway adding eight, seven, and seven kills, respectively. Ashlyn Belcher finished with a team-high 19 assists.
The Monarchs stopped nine kill attempts with Leeanne Lowery stopping six spikes at the net and Conway and Emma Schelah blocking three attempts each. Kate Kilpatrick finished with 14 digs.
In the opening set, Coastal raced to an 8-4 lead, ignited by a kill by Varani and capped off by an ODU miscue. After a 3-0 spurt by the Monarchs, the Chants responded with a 7-1 burst, highlighted by back-to-back service aces by Stout.
Old Dominion answered with a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to 16-11 only to see CCU use a 9-1 surge to claim a 25-12 opening-set win to lead the match 1-0, which included three kills by Van Elslande.
ODU doubled the Chants at 8-4 to open set number two. Coastal used a 7-1 run to take an 11-9 advantage, sparked by a Stout kill and capped by an unforced Monarch error. Old Dominion retook the lead with an 8-2 burst to lead 17-13. The Chanticleers evened the set at 18-18 with a 5-1 spurt that forced the home-standing Monarchs to call the timeout.
After trading the next seven rallies, Coastal Carolina led 22-21 before Old Dominion evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 second-set victory.
In the third set, ODU took a 7-2 lead before the Chants answered with a 5-1 surge to trail 8-7, which included blocks by Unal and Stout. A 3-1 run by the Monarchs increased the lead to 11-8 before Coastal scored four-straight points to lead 12-11, highlighted by a pair of Stout service aces.
The two teams traded the next seven points to remain even at 15-15 before Coastal took an 18-15 lead on kills by Unal and Stout. The Monarchs outscored the Chanticleers 10-2 to take the third set 25-20 and lead the match 2-1.
In the fourth and final set, the two teams traded 3-0 runs with CCU leading 5-4 before ODU got a second 10-2 run to take a 14-7 lead, which forced the Chants to call both timeouts. Coastal answered with a 6-2 spurt to trail 16-13 before the Monarchs added to its lead with a 4-2 run. The two teams traded the next nine rallies to give Old Dominion a 25-19 fourth-set victory and a 3-1 match win.
Coastal Carolina will return to the HTC Center in Conway, S.C. as the Chanticleers will host Georgia State on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11 and 12. The opening serve's are scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Friday and 2 p.m. ET on Saturday.
