Chance Miller, J.D., was named Coastal Carolina University's vice president for intercollegiate athletics and University recreation on June 13, 2024. Miller began his role on July 16, 2024, and serves on the President's Cabinet and the Executive Council.
Since arriving in Conway, Miller has overseen record-setting growth in attendance, fundraising, national visibility and fan engagement while leading a department that has captured multiple conference championships, earned bowl berths in consecutive seasons and advanced to the 2025 Men's College World Series Finals. In 2026, he was named to the Silver Waves Media Top Athletic Directors in America list, a national recognition honoring some of the nation's most impactful leaders in collegiate athletics.
Among Miller's accomplishments are the launch of the Coastal WAVE strategic plan; the establishment of the Social Media and Brand Engagement and Creative and New Media departments; the negotiation of one of the top multimedia rights agreements among Group of Six institutions; the launch of the ELITE '93 philanthropic giving society; the securing of multiple transformational seven-figure gifts; and record-setting growth in fundraising, sponsorship, licensing and revenue generation.
Miller has also expanded the athletics ticketing office, created the Alyse Svihla Student-Athlete Development and Engagement Program, introduced the Chanticleer Mobile App and implemented numerous fan-experience enhancements across Coastal Carolina's athletics venues. Under his leadership, Coastal negotiated a multi-year multimedia rights agreement with Playfly Sports, creating new opportunities to grow revenue and elevate the Coastal Carolina Athletics brand nationally.
Miller has prioritized innovative, fan-first initiatives designed to elevate the Chanticleer experience and grow support across all sports. In 2025, Coastal introduced "Chants Feast Free," becoming the first FBS program in the country to offer complimentary concessions at all home football games. The initiative received national attention and helped increase football season-ticket renewals from 64 percent to 90 percent.
Under Miller's leadership, Coastal has continued to build momentum across its 19 varsity sports. Football earned bowl berths in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl and the 2025 Shreveport Bowl, beach volleyball and baseball captured Sun Belt Conference regular-season championships, and baseball, men's golf and softball won Sun Belt Conference Tournament championships. Coastal baseball also advanced to the 2025 Men's College World Series Finals, while the department finished first among Sun Belt Conference institutions in the 2025 Learfield Directors' Cup standings.
Miller has also made a significant impact through key leadership hires across the department, including head football coach Ryan Beard, head women's soccer coach Pete Cuadrado, head men's soccer coach Adam Perron and 2021 national championship-winning baseball head coach Chris Lemonis.
Coastal's national visibility has expanded significantly during Miller's tenure. During the Chanticleers' 2025 postseason baseball run, the athletics department generated more than 28,000 new social media followers, more than 27 million social media impressions and more than $574 million in overall media exposure for Coastal Carolina University.
The momentum has also translated into record-setting support across Coastal's athletics venues. Baseball welcomed a program-record 112,526 fans during the 2026 regular season while averaging a program-record 3,880 fans per game. Football also drew the largest crowd in Brooks Stadium history during the 2025 season. In addition, Coastal hosted the Banana Ball World Tour at Springs Brooks Stadium in 2026, generating more than 5.18 million social media impressions through digital storytelling and branded content initiatives.
Beyond competition, Coastal student-athletes have continued to excel in the classroom and community. The Chanticleers led all NCAA Division I institutions with 11,547 community service hours completed during a single semester, earning the NCAA Division I Community Engagement Impact Award. Coastal student-athletes also posted a 3.35 department grade-point average during the Spring 2026 semester, extending the department's streak to 24 consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
Miller has also overseen significant growth in donor support and strategic investment across the department, including multiple transformational seven-figure commitments. Those investments include a $1 million commitment from the Tenney family in support of Coastal Carolina Football and a $1 million commitment from Patrick and Susan Sparks in support of athletics, establishing the Sparks Family Zone.
Miller provides leadership for Coastal Carolina's NCAA Division I athletics program, consisting of 19 varsity sports, nearly 200 coaches and staff members, and more than 550 student-athletes. Additionally, he provides executive leadership for University Recreation, Sports Turf and Golf Course Operations, and Teal Nation retail.
Prior to arriving in Conway, Miller served as senior deputy athletics director at the University of South Carolina for five years and previously held various roles in the Office of Compliance Services from April 2013 through July 2019. His responsibilities included serving as a member of the athletics department's executive management team, overseeing day-to-day internal and external operations and initiatives, serving as senior associate general counsel, providing executive oversight of the Office of Compliance Services and serving as the sport administrator for football.
At South Carolina, Miller helped lead facility and project planning, assisted in fundraising efforts for a $35 million capital campaign, raised $3 million for institutional name, image and likeness initiatives, designed the department's NIL educational programming and worked with a collective to establish tax, marketing and branding assistance for student-athletes.
Prior to South Carolina, Miller worked from 2009-13 at the NCAA, where he served as an assistant and associate director on the enforcement staff. He was the lead investigator on several NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions cases and served on the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct, NCAA Football Issues Working Group and NCAA and NFL Agent Regulation Working Group.
Before joining the NCAA, Miller practiced law in New York City. He served as assistant corporation counsel for the New York City Law Department, where he represented all New York City agencies, including the NYPD, FDNY and the New York City Teachers Union. Miller also worked in the National Football League's legal department, assisting with player conduct and disciplinary matters and coaches' contract approvals.
A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Miller earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in 2004 and a juris doctorate from New York Law School in 2008. He and his wife, Lauren, have two children, Cason and Caylor.
