The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (10-7, 3-3 Big South) won its first home conference match of the season, as it swept Birmingham Southern (9-8, 3-2 Big South) in three games (30-28, 30-27, 30-25) on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 10, at Kimbel Arena.
The first game was a tightly fought back and forth contest for much of the early going, as neither team was able to open up more than a three-point lead. A kill by sophomore Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) made the score 27-24 Coastal, but the Lady Panther would fight back and score the games next two points to get to within one. Coastal’s Katherine Jensen (Vancouver, British Columbia/Sentinel Secondary (Ole Miss)) made the big plays by registering two quick kills to give CCU a 30-28 game one victory.
The second game followed a similar pattern as the first, with neither team able to really open a sizable advantage for much of the early going. With the game tied at 27, it was again Jensen who made the big play, with a kill, to give the Lady Chanticleers a lead it would not reliquish the rest of the 30-27 win.
In game three with the contest tied at 18, Coastal finally was able to get a lead and control. A kill by Jensen and a few attack errors from the Panthers Sarah Martin and Kyndall Waters allowed Coastal to take a 22-18 lead. Coastal would open a six point lead at 27-21 on the kill by sophomore Krista Kimble (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro). BSC would attempt a comeback and close the deficit to 28-25 on the kill by Sarah Martin, but Coastal would stand strong and hold on for a 30-25 sweep.
The Chants were led to victory by Jensen who recorded a match-high 18 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Sophomore Alicia Meyers (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) also reached double figures with 16 kills. Libero Kali Banghart (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) had a solid performance with 19 digs. Junior setter Jennifer Hampton had a double-double with a match-high 44 assists and 15 digs. The Panthers were led by setter Kyndall Waters with 40 assists and 12 digs and junior Lindsey Herzog, who reached 30 digs for the second time this season.
