MOBILE, Ala. – Coastal Carolina (5-0, 5-0 SBC) scored its second-straight three-set victory over South Alabama (4-7, 4-3) by scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-21 to remain undefeated on the 2020 season. The nightcap victory came after an earlier 3-0 win on Thursday at South Alabama.
South Alabama scored four unanswered points early in the first set to open a 7-3 lead. After two quick points by the Chants, South Alabama used a kill by Hannah Maddux and a pair of Coastal attack errors to take a 10-5 advantage. The Jaguars continued to hold the lead at 21-18 before the Chants took a 22-21 lead with four-straight points led by a kill by
Anett Nemeth and a service ace by
Marija Borcic. With the set tied at 23-23,
Brigitta Petrenko hammered a kill and
Jelena Prolic ended the set at 25-23 with a service ace.
In the second set, Coastal used a 7-0 run to take a 13-5 lead and force a timeout by South Alabama. The Jaguars scored 10 of the next 16 points to battle back and close the gap to just one point at 16-15 on another kill by Maddux. The Chanticleers recovered to answer with a four-point run and built a 24-20 lead on a kill by Petrenko. South Alabama was able to survive the first two set points but Lillie Simons' attack error gave Coastal the 25-22 win.
The third set opened with three points by the Chanticleers when Petrenko opened play with a service ace and then back-to-back kills by Nemeth and
Ani Bozdeva. Coastal held the lead until South Alabama took a 14-13 advantage which would prove to be the Jaguars only lead of the final set. Leading 22-21, the Chants scored the final three points to take the match 25-21 on a service ace by Bozdeva.
Nemeth led all attackers in the match with 12 kills, while Bozdeva and Prolic added eight and six kills respectively. Petrenko set the offense with 30 set assists. Coastal helped keep South Alabama in the match with 13 service errors.
South Alabama was led with 10 kills by Maddux and Rebecca Walk added nine kills and four assisted blocks. Maddie Soboleski added 25 set assists and a pair of service aces.
The final match of the three-match series will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 16. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
