Forman Completes Coaching Staff

All three coaching additions bring a wealth of experience
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina volleyball head coach Jozsef Forman is excited to round out his coaching staff with the additions of Chad Sutton, Matthew Johann, and Valerie Nichol. Sutton and Johann will serve as assistant coaches, while Nichol will join the program as a volunteer assistant coach.
"Chad, Matt, and Val are very talented coaches with strong work ethics. They bring different experiences from the highest level, and this diversity makes them very special and fits our program," stated coach Forman. "They will mentor and serve our student-athletes in the highest manner. I am sure we will be ready to take the next step in the 2022 season."
Chad Sutton - Assistant Coach
Sutton comes to Coastal after one year at Purdue, serving as the Boilermakers volunteer assistant coach for the 2020-21 and 2021 seasons. At Purdue, he helped lead the Boilermakers to back-to-back NCAA Division I Elite 8 appearances in the spring of 2021 and the fall of 2021.
The Boilermakers went 16-7 overall in the 2020-21 season, playing a Big Ten only schedule in the spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and followed that up with a 26-7 record this fall season and ranked in the top 15 of the 2021 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division 1 Coaches Poll Top 25 all season long.
Prior to his time at Purdue, Sutton served four years as the head coach of Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota, Florida. With Sutton at the helm, the Cougars made back-to-back state championship appearances with a pair of 22+ winning seasons. In 2019, he led the team to the 2019 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 3A State Championship title.
The 2019 Florida Dairy Farmers 3A Coach of the Year has produced 16 Division I-bound players in nine years and directed five teams that have finished in the top-5 at the AAU Nationals.
Before taking the reins at Cardinal Mooney, Sutton was the club director for the Orlando Tampa Volleyball Academy from 2017-19 and the head women's volleyball coach for Sarasota High School from 2011-15.
Matthew Johann - Assistant Coach
Johann spent the last two years working as a coach and recruiting coordinator for the Downstate Juniors Volleyball Club in New York after serving as an assistant volleyball coach at both Cornell (2018-19) and Syracuse (2015-18).
With the Downstate Juniors Volleyball Club, Johann coached the top-level 18U team for two years, as well as one year with the new leveled 15U athletes. He was in charge of all practice planning and coaching coordination, as well as in-match coaching responsibilities. He also served as the recruiting coordinator, working with the student-athletes and parents to aid them in the recruiting process while also connecting the student-athletes with collegiate coaches.
In his two seasons at Cornell in 2018-19, Johann helped the team to a pair of third-place finishes in the Ivy League standings. Cornell amassed a 14-10 overall and 9-5 conference record in 2018 and built on that in 2019 to finish the season with a 17-6 overall record, including an 8-4 mark in conference play. The team's 17 wins in 2019 marked the most since 2006 when the team won 18 matches. The Big Red went on an 11-match win streak over the middle portion of the season, marking the longest winning streak since 2003. Over the two seasons, he helped coach eight All-Ivy League selections.
Prior to his stint at Cornell, Johann was an assistant coach on the Syracuse coaching staff from 2015-18. During his time with Syracuse, the Orange posted an overall record of 52-45 and a mark of 32-28 in the ACC. He also coached a pair of AVCA Regional All-Americans, two first-team All-ACC honorees, and one second-team All-ACC selection.
Johann joined the Syracuse staff after serving as a graduate assistant coach of the women's volleyball program at Westminster College. While at Westminster, he worked with a squad that produced three all-conference honorees and qualified for conference tournament postseason play. He was responsible for all aspects of player development and program management including statistical data, practice planning, scouting reports, and academic achievement.
At Juniata College, Johann served as a student assistant coach and was a part of an NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship DIII national runner-up team that boasted four AVCA All-Americans. He was responsible for most aspects of player development and was a coordinator with the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania tournaments during his time there.
Johann has also served as a coach for USA High Performance Volleyball since 2012. He recently served as an associate head coach for the 2019 Girls Youth A2 Program in Charlotte, North Carolina, and as a technical coordinator for the 2019 Boys Youth National Team Training in Anaheim, California. He was also the head coach for the 2018 Girls Youth Continental Team that competed at the High Performance Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Valerie Nichol – Volunteer Assistant Coach
Nichol comes to Coastal Carolina after spending the 2021 fall season as the assistant head coach at McCutcheon High School in Lafayette, Indiana, and serving as the volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater in the 2020 fall season.
In the fall of 2021, Nichol helped lead McCutcheon High School to its first IHSAA Class 4A State Championship in school history. She mentored the sophomore setter into earning MaxPreps High School Volleyball second-team All-American honors and designed the offensive schemes and game plans for each match throughout the season.
As the volunteer coach at Purdue in fall 2020, Nichol conducted daily setter position training sessions focusing on quantity of quality reps, worked alongside the staff to review and analyze training sessions to make practices more productive, and used VolleyMetrics to create a scouting report to effectively attack and
defend an opponent.
While the Boilermakers did not play in fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nichol played a big part in helping Purdue go 16-7 overall and advanced to the 2020 NCAA Division I Elite 8 in the 2021 spring season.
Nichol has also worked several collegiate camps, including summer camps at Purdue, Kentucky, Florida Southern College, Redlands University, and All-American Volleyball Camps, and has club coaching experience with The Academy Boiler Juniors program.
As a student-athlete, Nichol was a four-year starter as a pin attacker and setter for Purdue from 2011-14. She was a two-time AVCA All-American and twice garnered AVCA All-Region and All-Big Ten honors while helping lead the Boilermakers to two NCAA Division I Sweet 16 appearances and one NCAA Division I Elite 8 appearance.
Nichol was also a member of the USA National A2 Team in 2012 and 2013, a member of the USA College National Team U22 in 2014 in Europe for the Global Challenge, and part of the Women's USA National Team Training Camp in 2017.
She went on to play professionally for seven years, winning the 2016-17 German Cup Championship, the 2016-17 German Super Cup Championship, and twice finishing as the German League runner-up with Allianz MTV Stuttgart of Germany from 2015-17 before moving on to play in Poland with the Impel Wroclaw (2017-18) and LKS Commercecon Lodz (2018-19) for two years. She then returned to Germany to play with SC Potsdam from 2019-20 before playing the 2021 spring season with the Athletes Unlimited Professional Volleyball League in Dallas, Texas, and the 2021 summer season with Las Pinkin De Corozal in Puerto Rico.
She will again compete this spring in the Athletes United Professional Volleyball League.
An Academic Big Ten selection, Nichol graduated from Purdue with a bachelor's degree in movement and sport science and a minor in psychology in 2015.

Matthew Johann - Assistant Coach
