CONWAY, S.C. – The 2023 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for this week, May 11-13, hosted by Coastal Carolina and the City of Myrtle Beach at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The three-day event will begin Thursday at 12 p.m. ET and finish on Saturday evening.
There will be an entry fee charged at the entrance to the stadium. The prices are $20 for a Championship Pass and $12 for a daily pass. All Sun Belt Conference students with a valid institutional student ID will get in free, as well as children ages six and under.
Women's Team
Coastal's women's team will send a total of 20 student-athletes to compete at the championship meet, highlighted by an experienced group of sprinters, hurdlers, distance runners, and throwers.
Experienced sprinter
Kayla Sweeney, who has the top time in the Sun Belt in the 100-meters and the third-fastest mark in the 200-meters, will headline the sprints group. The junior will be joined by sophomore
Alexis Glasco, who has the third-best time in the 100-meters event in the SBC this season, and sophomore
Camryn Lorick in the 100-meters, while fellow junior
Sydney Clemens will race along with Sweeney in the 200-meters.
A trio of Chants will run in the 400-meters in juniors
Lauren Gordon,
Amelia Canetto, and
Brianna Tillman, while three other Chants will represent the teal and bronze in the distance events in sophomore
Amilia Wise-Sweat in the 800-meters, junior
Molly Jones in the 5,000-meters, and redshirt sophomore
Ellie Wolski in the 10,000-meters. All three distance runners rank in the top-15 across their respective three events.
Headlining the hurdles events will be Glasco, as the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track & Field 60-meter hurdles champion will compete in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles events. The sophomore has the best time in the Sun Belt in the 100-meter hurdles and the second-fastest mark in the 400-meter hurdles this year.
Clemens, who has the third-best mark in the SBC in the 100-meter hurdles, will also compete in the 100-meter hurdles event, while fellow Chants
Amanda Kinloch and
Alyssa Smith will join Glasco in competing in the 400-meter hurdles this weekend. Kinloch enters the championship meet with the sixth-best time in the Sun Belt for both hurdles events.
Leading the Chanticleers in the field events will be throwers
Zayna Fray-Samuel and
Lauralyn Clifford in the hammer throw, Lorick and
Kadasia Evans in the high jump, and
Kynnedy Dennis in the pole vault event.
Fray-Samuel enters the conference championship meet with the fifth-best mark in the hammer throw event in the conference, while Clifford ranks 16th.
Lorick has recorded the fourth-best mark in the high jump event, while Evans has the 18th-best height in the SBC to date. Dennis ranks 12th in the Sun Belt in the pole vault heading into the championship meet this weekend.
The Chanticleers will have four underclassmen compete for the very first time in the conference outdoor championships in
Mia Lewis,
Keiran Martin,
Claire Spiller, and
Destiny St. Cyr.
Lewis, Martin, and St. Cyr will all compete in the long jump event, while Lewis and Spiller will take part in the triple jump.
Men's Team
The Men in Teal will have 20 student-athletes participate over the three-day championship, headlined by the sprint and hurdles groups.
Sophomore
Garrett Wilkins, who has the top time for the Chants in both the 100 and 200-meters this season, will compete in both the sprint events and be joined in the 100 and 200-meter events by freshman
Deondre Hardy and junior
DeVonte Harris.
Senior
Albrey Gossett and sophomore
Ashlund Dixon will both race in the 100-meters, while newcomer
Jaavier Jackson will take part in the 200-meter dash.
In the 400-meters, the Chants will send
Brendan Kovar and
Robert Johnson, as the duo both rank in the top-20 in the Sun Belt Conference this season for the event.
Coastal will have three Chants compete in the 110-meter hurdles for the championship meet, as the 2021 Sun Belt Conference 110-meter hurdles champion
Braydon Bennett will lead the charge along with veterans Gossett and
Jaquon Williams. All three rank in the top-10 in the event heading into the meet this weekend.
In the distance events, sophomores
Isaiah Thomas and
Trey Kraimer will run in the 800-meters, while fellow teammate
Tomas Duncan will run in the 10,000-meters. Underclassmen
Ethan Blackwelder and
George Werner Jr., who rank in the top-15 in the SBC this year, will compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase event.
A total of six Chants will represent the teal and bronze in the field events at the conference championship meet, with Hardy the lone Chant to compete in the jumps events, taking part in the long jump.
Seniors
Major Chestnut and
Aaron Keeler will compete in the discus and javelin throw events, respectively, while sophomore
Michael Martello will throw both the shot put and hammer this weekend.
Freshmen
Chance Tressler and
Killian Oberheu will join Martello in the shot put and hammer throw events, respectively.
Day one (Thursday) of action will start at noon ET with the multi-events and field events, while the running events will begin at approximately 6:10 p.m. ET.
Day two (Friday) will begin at 11 a.m. ET, while day three (Saturday) is set to start at noon ET.
